Ursodeoxycholic Acid (ACTIBILE) is a non-toxic hydrophilic bile acid
that exhibits hepatoprotection against hydrophobic bile acids. UDCA (ACTIBILE)
is currently used in clinical practice worldwide for cholestatic liver
diseases like primary biliary cirrhosis. Primary sclerosing cholangitis
and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. Besides classic cholestatic
diseases, UDCA also improves liver biochemistry in alcoholic liver
diseases, non alcoholic steatohepatitis and in chronic viral hepatitis.
The drug is US FDA approved for Gall Stone dissolutions and chronic
cholestatic diseases. Much progress has been made from the first concept
that the only mechanism of action of this bile acid was its choleretic
action. One of the most fascinating mechanism of action evoked for UDCA
(ACTIBILE) is its immunomodulating, antiapoptic action. Studies have
indicated that UDCA has specific anti ulcerant properties.
