| Cough It is a physiological protective reflex by which unwanted
materials like mucous or foreign bodies are expelled out of the respiratory tract. To
cough effectively a person must have an intact receptors reflex, intact laryngeal function
and effective chest muscles & diaphragm.
Expectorant
& Mucolytics
Though
a protective response cough may sometimes cause inconvenience to patients. This makes
treatment mandatory & depending upon whether it is productive or non-productive, cough
formulations differ e.g. in conditions like bronchitis, bronchiectesis cystic fibrosis
there is accumulation of sputum. Cough helps to take the secretion out. This is called
PRODUCTIVE COUGH. Expectorants are the drugs of choice in productive cough.
Anti-tussives
Cough
when non-productive becomes a nuisance. Cough suppressants or anti-tussives may be used to
provide symptomatic relief to dry non-productive cough.
