Haemostasis may be defined as a
process that
i) Maintains blood in fluid state within the vasculature
ii) Minimises blood loss when the blood is outside the blood vessels -
thus facilitating the clotting mechanism
The normal process of haemostasis involves chronologically a vascular
response, formation of platelet plug (temporary clot) and formation of a permanent fibrin
clot.
Drugs that facilitate the normal process of clotting by interfering
with the stages mentioned above are called Haemostatics.
